Birds and Their Nests

Studying animals and their homes aims to foster a deep respect for nature, develop empathy and responsibility, and promote scientific curiosity. Examine bird nests to understand how birds adapt to environments, protect offspring from predators and weather, and use materials to create secure microclimates.

This set includes the following 10 types of bird nests: adherent, aquatic, burrow, cavity, cup, mound, pendent, platform, scrape, and no nest.

Identify and classify birds by the type of nests they build. Verify the classification using the control chart.

Each of the 10 types of nests includes:

  • information card
  • photo of the nest
  • 3 types of birds that build the nest
  • 3 pictures of specific birds that build the nest

Also includes:

  • general information on bird nests (function, who, where, when, materials)
  • 6 additional photographs of interesting nests
  • 1 control chart

The cards are in a three-part format:

  • cards with labels
  • cards without labels
  • labels

To use three-part cards, match the labels to the corresponding pictures. Verify the matches using the control cards with the labels.
