Types of Rocks

Studying rocks and minerals fosters a love of nature, sharpens observational skills, and introduces key earth science concepts.

To use the Types of Rocks Sorting activity, identify and classify rocks into the three major rock groups (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). Then, verify the classifications using the control charts.

The following 18 rocks are included: andesite, basalt, gabbro, granite, obsidian, rhyolite, breccia, conglomerate, limestone, rock salt, sandstone, shale, gneiss, hornfels, marble, phyllite, quartzite, and slate.

Includes:
  • 18 picture cards of the rocks
  • information cards
  • pronunciation cards
  • category cards
  • 2 control charts
  • 3 classification charts
  • 2 blank classification charts

The rock picture cards are in a 3-part format:

  • 18 cards with labels
  • 18 cards without labels
  • 18 labels

To use these three-part cards, match the labels to their corresponding pictures. Use the labeled control cards to verify the matches.

Sorting cards are approx. 3¼" x 3¾", charts are 8½" x 11".
